Each period has its own set of tasks. The new black ceramic women’s watch “Royal Oak” demonstrates the cosmic scale of thought and no less ambition.
Gerald Genta, a watchmaker inspired by the notion of conquering new realms where class biases and stereotypes have no place, created the first Royal Oak model for Audemars Piguet in 1972.
For many years, the Royal Oak ship has been on a trip. Different models and collections are produced on the basis of Royal Oak, in-house calibers are augmented with watch complexities, new materials are attempted on dials and hour markers – but the classic eight facets on the bezel are always retained. It is kept in place by hexagonal screws, and the bracelet’s links do not alter form.
Jacqueline Demier, an Audemars Piguet designer, adapted the men’s Royal Oak to the women’s wrist in 1976. Men wore the 39mm Royal Oak at the time, while ladies wore the 29mm Royal Oak Mini. The same eight facets of the bezel, the same hex screws, the same metal bracelet link forms. The steel Royal Oak Mini without diamonds and a trace of jewelry seemed desperately audacious at an age when women’s watches were considered exclusively a luxury item, and women’s watches in a business or sports style for every day simply did not exist.
This summer, the first Royal Oak for ladies in ceramic will be released. The wait was long, but it was well worth it. In a black ceramic case with a 34 mm diameter and a rose gold bezel, there is an automatic in-house caliber 5800 with a power reserve of 50 hours and water resistance to 50 meters, designed specifically for the 34 mm Royal Oak model last year.
