The IUCN Green List is a globally recognized standard for nature conservation. It now includes a total of 59 protected nature reserves and national parks in 16 countries. “The protected areas on the IUCN Green List are characterized by exemplary business practices and a long-term commitment to successful and effective conservation.” This was indicated by IUCN Director General Bruno Oberle.
he is the former head of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (Bafu, a division of the Swiss Ministry of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, Eidgenössisches Departement für Umwelt, Verkehr, Energie und Kommunikation UVEK). Such national parks, he said, are critically important if only humanity wants to “stop the process of a sharp decline in the degree of biodiversity on the planet” and achieve by 2030 “the promising goal of placing 30% of the world’s land under systemic protection.”
The Swiss National Park was created just over a century ago in the Engadin and Val Müstair regions in the canton of Graubünden in the east of the country. The International Union for Conservation of Nature recognizes its inclusion in the “green list” of the fact that the park has achieved the highest standards in the field of protection of alpine and subalpine natural zones.
The Swiss National Park is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to many endangered plant and animal species. Together with the Swiss National Park, two regions in Italy and seven new protected areas in France were added to the green list. It is she who forms the largest group of protected regions that have the prestigious “quality mark” from the IUCN.
When entering the green list, the World Conservation Union takes into account such factors as the quality of management and planning, the effectiveness and success of technologies for the care and maintenance of nature parks. About five hundred more nature reserves and national parks from about a dozen countries are now expected to be included in this list.
