Zermatt: Switzerland’s first autonomous cable car

Zermatt Bergbahnen AG is giving itself a Christmas present, to its guests and to the locals. The brand new 10-person Kumme gondola lift, which can be coupled, has been put into operation. This new “gem” at Matterhorn ski paradise impresses with its attractive design and state-of-the-art technology. Check the news Zermatt: Switzerland’s first autonomous cable car on Switzerland based Luxury Lifestyle Magazine- Kenleaks Magazine.

Despite the confinement and insecurities inherent in the health situation, this innovative ski lift project launched last spring was implemented as planned, in particular thanks to the support of a long-standing financial partner. After intense and eventful construction work during the summer, the brand new exemplary project of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG was opened as planned. A total of CHF 30 million has been invested in the facilities. In addition to this cable car, there is a 4.5 km long snowmaking installation and no less than 63 new snow throwers as well as 5 masts, for safe and high-quality fun on the slopes. The godfather of this ultramodern installation is Andreas Biner, president of the Zermatt bourgeoisie.

Harmony with the alpine environment

From the construction phase, special attention had already been paid to the strict harmonization of the installation with nature. Thanks to environmental monitoring of the works, damage to nature could be reduced to a minimum and renaturation planned. This cable car promises that more snow sports enthusiasts will come to the Rrothorn area. In order to preserve the wildlife retreat areas despite everything, a new wilderness reserve has been set up below the Rothorn.

The appearance of this lift also reflects our mountain region: many four thousand meters from Zermatt and various alpine animals from the region are represented on the cabins.

During the journey, the panorama is just as remarkable as the design. The comfortable Kumme cable car swings silently from Tufternkehr to Rothorn, passing through the Wyss Gufer middle station, offering exceptional views from all sides with the Matterhorn in sight. It perfectly combines movement, relaxation and a panoramic journey.

In fact, the highlight of the Kumme gondola can be found behind the scenes. The ski lift manufacturer Doppelmayr / Garaventa has used state-of-the-art technical resources to develop the visionary “AURO” system. Under the name “AURO – Autonomous Ropeway Operation”, Doppelmayr / Garaventa is launching an autonomous ski lift. The AURO gondola is distinguished by its unmanned operation. State-of-the-art, it is distinguished by an intelligent and connected design, as well as optimum safety. Especially when boarding and disembarking travelers, surveillance is provided by cameras and sensors. This system independently identifies situations that are outside the scope of “normal operation”. If, for example, a guest had to get stuck in the cabin door by their ski boots, the system reacts immediately and automatically stops the installation. It can only be restarted by a member of the lift staff. In its control center called “Ropeway Operation Center (ROC)”, it constantly keeps an eye on the system. This successful synergy between man and technical progress guarantees the high level of reliability and availability of an AURO installation. Autonomous ski lifts represent a solution of the future for wired mobility. Safely and reliably, AURO facilities bring their guests to their destination, in tourist areas as well as in cities. the system reacts immediately and automatically stops the installation. It can only be restarted by a member of the lift staff. In its control center called “Ropeway Operation Center (ROC)”, it constantly keeps an eye on the system. This successful synergy between man and technical progress guarantees the high level of reliability and availability of an AURO installation.

The Kumme cable car is the first of its kind to be put into service in Switzerland.

“With the inauguration of this exceptional facility, Zermatt is continuing its development in a pioneering spirit. This gondola is in line with previous revolutionary projects, such as the highest altitude station in Europe or the highest tricable gondola in the world. The first weeks following the commissioning of this engineering feat and the positive development of frequencies confirmed that the ski area below the Rothorn has undergone massive improvement. We hope that this project will pave the way for unprecedented technical innovation beyond Zermatt, ”says Markus Hasler, CEO of ZBAG.
